Can’t add the Event Viewer from a Remote Machine to a Management Console (MMC)

If you run the MMC Console as an Domain Admin and you can’t add the event viewer of an remote machine to the mmc console it is probably because of the firewall settings.

Go to the remote machine and run firewall.cpl:
Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall->Check Remote Event Log Management.

That’s it. Enjoy;-)

Migrate Printers from Windows 2008 to 2012 with Powershell

It is possible to export all printers from Windows 2008 Server and import them again into Windows 2012. I tried this method but got just error messages and I didn’t like the fact, that it imports also the old drivers. So I installed first the necessary printer drivers on the new server and run the script below to create all the printers. It automatically adds the necessary ports and the printers. If you want to add more parameters it is easily possible.

Create CSV file with the printers (printers.csv):
Name, IP, Driver, Location
"PRINTER01", "192.168.1.10", "Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6", "Main Building, First Floor"
"PRINTER02", "192.168.1.11", "Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6", "Main Building, Second Floor"

Script to import the printers (printers.ps1):
$printers = Import-Csv c:\temp\powershell\printers.csv

foreach ($printer in $printers) {
    Add-PrinterPort -Name $printer.Name -PrinterHostAddress $printer.IP
    Add-Printer -Name $printer.Name -DriverName $printer.Driver -PortName $printer.Name -Comment $printer.Comment -ShareName $printer.Name
    Set-printer -Name $printer.Name -Shared $true -Published $true
}

Install Active Directory from a media to save initial replication time

If you need to setup Active Directory on another location and you don’t much bandwith you can install it from a media.

On the source AD create the files to copy to the media:
#ntdsutil
#activate instance ntds
#ifm

#create rodc c:\temp
For a Read Only Domain Controller

#create full c:\temp
For a Standard Domain Controller
#quit
#quit

Check the files and copy it to a media. On the new DC you can choose the files for the first replication

Windows 2012 Adding of Roles and Features can’t find Installation FIles

Error Message:
Do you need to specify an alternate source path? One or more installation selections are missing source files on the destination server.

This is quite annoying and it took my also a while to figure it out the first time. In Windows 2008 you din’t need your Windows DVD anymore to add features and roles. In Windows 2012 they have changed it to save storage. This isn’t actually bad but I don’t understand why they made the installation wizard so complicated, so that you can’t figure it out on your own.

The solution to this error is somewhere at the begining of the installation. You need to choose Specify Alternate Source Path and enter your Windows 2012 dvd or load the image of it:
Specify Alternate Source Path
D:\Sources\SxS\

Windows 2012 Minimal Server Interface

If you don’t want to install the whole GUI and still have the comfort to install server features and roles easily, this might be the right option for you.

What can you use?
– Server Manager
– MMC Snap-Ins
– Subset of Control Panel

What is missing?
– Desktop
– No Windows Explorer
– No Internet Explorer etc.

To switch from GUI to Minimal Server Interface run following command in powershell:
#Install-Windowsfeature server-gui-shell –remove –restart

To switch from Core to Minimal Server Interface run following command in powershell:

From Windows 2012 Server Core to GUI

By default Windows 2012 Server is installed without a GUI (Graphic User Interface). But compared to Windows 2008 R2, it can be added later with following command:
#Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra, Server-Gui-Shell

Unfortunately this command did not work for me because it can’t find the source. So you need to put/mount Windows 2012 Server CD first and after that run following commands:
1. Create a folder to mount Server WIM.
#mkdir C:\MountWim\
2.  Get the index number of the GUI Server image.
#dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:d:\sources\install.wim
3. Mount the WIM for the installed Server with GUI. In my case it was DataCenter GUI which had the index number 4.
#dism /mount-wim /wimfile: d:\sources\install.wim /Index:4 /mountdir:C:\MountWim\ /readonly
4. Run powershell:
#powershell
5. Start Installation:
#Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra, Server-Gui-Shell –restart –source C:\MountWim\Windows\WinSxS

Or you can mount straight away the Wim-File:
1. #Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra, Server-Gui-Shell –restart –source wim:d\sources\install.wim:4
